Falling In a Dream,
But Never Going Splat
Why is it that I always stop falling just above the surface of something that would have killed me in the non-dream world?
It happens every time.
I dream that I'm falling. If I land, the sudden stop will surely kill me.
Yet, my fall quickly slows down beginning about as far from the surface as my physical body is tall.
By the time my fall takes me to within a distance about the length of my foot, my fall is arrested and I float there just above the surface.
Sometimes, if my falling speed is very fast, like if I fall in the dream from a very high place, I might bounce just a little bit, like on a mattress of air.
My fall is arrested before splatting, whether I dream I'm falling onto a hard surface, upon a surface with a little give, like water, and even when falling on top of clouds.
"Answer me that," I say to The Universe.
